When we first saw this corner cupboard the cabinet-work was in a good state of repair, but the surface was very dark and gloomy and, on first sight, not particularly appealing. But we are interested in Japanning and, when we looked more closely, we saw a lovely little face with fair ringlets peering out of the murk, and hints of other decoration began to become apparent - a glimpse of cinnabar red, a little blue, a sinuous line or two of gilding.
Sensing that the piece was rather special, we bought the cupboard, but without really knowing what an expert restoration would reveal. After several months under the sensitive care of restorer Pedro da Costa Felgueiras, the wonderful and rather naive decoration emerged from the gloom, virtually intact, in all its vivid charm and delightful detail. We were thrilled to see this lovely piece come back to life as Pedro carefully cleaned off hundreds of years of grime, and pleased to bring it back into an 18th century panelled room, where it looks totally at home.
