A BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY FOR A WHILE .....

A BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY FOR A WHILE .....

This large porcelain plate is a rather unusual purchase for us, but when we first saw it, upside down and covered in dust, and turned it over to have a look at it, we first thought that this was an interesting piece, but not right for us.  But we gave it a second look, and began to be won over by its robust potting and charming hand-painted decoration, especially the various insects which seemed to be placed rather randomly around the border of the plate, and the fact that it had the "feel" of 18th century Europe.  Also, it was in superb condition, with the distinctive decoration and gilded edge practically without wear.  Despite not knowing which factory produced the plate, we bought it simply because we liked it, and then tried to find out more about it.

We felt it to be either French or German, and hoped the marks on the underside would help us with more specific identification.  What we'd forgotten was that, all over Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries there were hundreds of porcelain factories, large and small, famous and obscure, with thousands of different identifying marks.  So we gave up, and let this handsome dish stand on its own merits.  Quite soon after putting it on the website we had an email from a very nice man in Germany who told us exactly which factory the plate was made in (a small factory in Niderviller/Niederweiler), and that there were examples in the Victoria and Albert Museum and elsewhere.  We are always thrilled to learn something new, and amazed and grateful for the specialist knowledge that abounds everywhere, that people are so willing to share.  Click here to find out more about this PORCELAIN PLATTER .....
