A FASCINATING SOCIAL AND HISTORICAL DOCUMENT IN BRASS ...

Without wishing to appear pompous, part of what we dealers in antiques do is to conserve and protect our fragile cultural and folk heritage.  This brass memorial plaque, engraved with beautiful early-17th century cut lettering, is a piece we've had for a while, and perhaps would appeal best to people with a taste for the arcane and unusual.  But we immediately found several reasons why we should buy it.  First reason: conservation - when we first saw it, the rear side of the plaque had been used to mix plaster on, so we felt we had to rescue this rare object from loss or destruction;  second reason: aesthetic - the wording and the lovely lettering are wonderful echoes of an age long gone, and quite beautiful in themselves;  third reason: historic - the individuals whose lives are encapsulated in the elegantly formal inscription are of interest to us today, and connected with the lives and times of great figures of the late 16th and early 17th centuries.   Click on the link to find out more about THOMAS AND ELIZABETH UNDERHILL
