Robert is American by birth and upbringing, but has long been resident in the United Kingdom. At Yale University, University College London and the Courtauld Institute of Art, he specialised in art history. This was followed by a number of years at a well known Mayfair antiques business, culminating in a Managing Directorship. He opened his own business in 1989. More than 40 years of working with a wide range of antiques and works of art, both British and Continental, and a particular knowledge of the best of oak and country antiques, have equipped Robert with a deep understanding of what makes a piece both special and “right”.
John came to the UK from New Zealand in 1980, and for many years pursued a career in mental health and counselling, with a particular interest in work with children and families. He has always had a love of art, antiques and design, inherited from his parents, and a particular enthusiasm for folk objects, expecially those of Britain and Scandinavia, and a fascination with the social history behind these objects. Over a number of years John found himself becoming increasingly involved in the business, expanding his knowledge of, and regard for, the kind of antiques Robert specialises in. With the rapid growth of Robert's business, John finally joined it full-time in 1998.
Our antique oak and country furniture is amongst the best to be found anywhere, and is bought by private customers and collectors, designers and decorators. We choose it for style and strength of design, for originality, plus a special quality that raises it above the ordinary.
Our pieces have all the individual and unique charm and character of country-made things, often with a distinct sculptural quality, and convey a strong sense of the hand of their makers. They are mainly English and Welsh, 18th century and earlier, and reflect our love of native British woods - oak, elm, ash, walnut and fruitwood - and have wonderful colour and patination.
We also sell a wide range of interesting and unusual decorative objects and folk art, including ceramics and pottery, needlework samplers, brass and metalwork, and treen.
Quality, originality and style, backed by knowledge, experience, and an original eye, and a love for what we sell.
